What to do when your website crashes

Posted on September 29, 2017 at 10:32 am

Websites can crash for a number of reasons, one of which is having too many users on the site for the hosting allowance required, whilst another possible reason is someone has hacked your website causing it to fail on purpose. It’s sad to say that this does happen a lot, but if this ever happens to you there are a few things you can do. First, you need to contact your hosting company and see if they can get a backup in place immediately, perhaps removing the problem. If a backup doesn’t do it, they may have a team or a support company who can help them. They need to do as much as possible to help you out if you’re paying for a big hosting package after all that’s exactly what you’re paying for! The secret to solving this problem often lies with the hosting company, and no good hosting company will host a website without experience in dealing with emergencies.

Selecting a Web hosting company for your business

Posted on May 21, 2017 at 1:03 pm

It is important that you choose a reputable web hosting company when it comes to your business website. With more issues regarding web security, it is vital that your web hosting company is trust worthy. There are a few important factors you should also consider:

UK based- Finding a UK based hosting company not only provides you with easier support, compared to contacting the US, it also improves SEO for UK search engines too.

Customer support- Customer support is key to any web hosting company. Being able to contact the support team around the clock, with UK offices.

Reviews- Check out their reviews! Take a look at the company rating and see what other businesses think about the hosting service.

Cost- Whilst you want a good price, you also want a good service. If prices appear too good to be true, then that may be the case. Most hosting companies will offer you a deal for hosting multiply websites.

Why choosing a reliable web hosting company is important

Posted on February 23, 2017 at 1:45 am

Most business owners may question why selecting a reliable web hosting company is important as they ‘all do the same job’. This is true to some extent, they can all host your website, but some will have more perks than others.

Avoid revenue loss

If you hire any company due to the small amount of fee you are required to pay, there is a possibility of your site being more offline than it should be. Due to this, your potential customers may not have access to your products when they need them most leading to them opting for another company.

Evade lower Search Engine ranking

If your site repeatedly goes down when potential clients are searching for services similar to those you provide, the chances are that your ranking will be negatively affected.

Provide security in case of attacks

Reliable web hosting companies will back up your data to a remote server due to online threats such as hacking, botnets, denial of service, or malware attacks that may affect the access to your site’s information online. With the availing of reliable company services, the website owner is therefore saved from the hassle that might result from such unpredictable attacks.

Domains and Web Hosting – One for all?

Posted on December 29, 2016 at 6:33 am

Many people use one company for domain registration and hosting. It’s natural really as most companies who sell domains offer hosting. It can make good business sense in many ways too because you only ever need to deal with one company for most web related tasks.

That said, some people argue having all of your eggs in one basket can cause problems. Let’s look into this. If you were to have some problems with your hosting company, it could prove tricky to leave. Why? Because you can’t simple get your name servers pointed elsewhere to your new hosting company, after all, your current firm is in control of your name servers.

What does this mean?

It means that if you were to find issues with your hosting company, they could potentially make it difficult or expensive for you to leave and nobody wants this. By having your domain renewal fees with one company and hosting with another you can get the best of both world, as long as they’re both reputable companies in their own right. There are many UK based hosting companies but you’ll notice that they’re often beaten by big US based brands in Google searches.

apple-iphone-smartphone-deskThis is why it’s imperative that you take your time before choosing a hosting company. It’s a huge decision because it can either cause you to have huge headaches in the future or a pleasant service without any complications.

Choosing the right company will not only save you money, it will save you time. A good hosting company will often give you no problems whatsoever, and should your website encounter any issues, they’ll be quick to fix it.

Make sure you take the time to weigh up your options. Do your research first and check out reviews. This is one of the most important tasks before choosing a hosting or domain management company.

Optimising your images

Posted on August 28, 2016 at 9:00 pm

By optimising the images on your website you can drastically improve speed, perhaps making your site more SEO friendly too because we all know Google and Bing love a fast loading website. To optimise your images, simply open them in Photoshop and size them correctly. So, if you have a 300×300 pixel space on your website for an image, size the image to that scale and ‘save it for web’. Reduce the quality of the image for a lower overall file size but don’t choose one that’s too low because you still want nice looking visuals on your website. Once you’ve saved it, simply upload it via your CMS or by FTP. That’s all there is to it, and if you do this each time you add a new image you’ll be making your website faster and more user-friendly. So it really is a job worth doing right.

Checking your website speed abroad

Posted on April 15, 2016 at 8:02 pm

I thought no matter how fast my website is in my country it will be the same elsewhere. Only I was completely wrong. I tested the speed for my WordPress website using a 3rd party tool and it clocked the loading time in at 3.1 seconds. I was fairly happy with this as it said my site was faster than 71% of websites in the UK. I then ran the same speed test but changed the location to Australia. The results were terrible. It clocked in at 11.6 seconds. How can that be, the only different aspect is the location? I thought to myself, is Australia way behind on Wi-Fi or something? The problem is, a website will always load quicker when it’s hosted your own country, if it was hosted in Australia it would be quick there and slow here. I’ve managed to optimise it and speed it up significantly, but it hasn’t made much of a difference down under. Lucky I don’t have many customers from there!

My favourite WP Plugin right now

Posted on March 24, 2016 at 10:12 pm

WP Smush is a plugin I was recommended by my hosting company to speed up my website and it’s the most amazing plugin I’ve ever installed. It’s specially created to optimise images on WordPress websites, and it essentially ‘smushes’ the images, reducing their overall file size, meaning your pages load quicker. The great thing about it is it’s a one-click plugin, and every time you add a new image to your gallery, it will automatically ‘smush’ it. It was created by WPMU DEV and it has over 400,000 active installs. Are you one of the current users? We’d love to know you thoughts. I’ve never known it to be so easy to strip hidden bulky information so quickly, and it’s definitely helped me improve SEO because my site is a lot faster. And so my visits are up this month!

Are you overpaying for hosting?

Posted on December 20, 2015 at 10:02 pm

Hosting can often sneak up on us, and it’s only when we’re looking through our emails or invoices when we really start to see that we’ve been ripped off — possibly for years! We recently changed our hosting, and that’s because time moves on quickly. You can get a great hosting package a really great price nowadays, and it’s important to shop around each time your contract nears renewal.

Hosting is something you, as a business owner, have to keep on top of, and if you sit back and relax, years can go by without you even realising just how much you’re paying. Save yourself some serious money, and review your hosting options. If you only have a blog or a brochure website, in most cases, all you will need is the following:

  • A UK Hosting company
  • Automatic backups
  • 24 hour support
  • 50gb diskspace
  • 5 databases
  • FTP Access

Attract New Visitors With Attractive Web Design

Posted on March 20, 2015 at 4:22 pm

The life blood of a business is its income, and within a website that income comes its visitors. A constantly and steadily increasing stream of new visitors is what generates income for many web based businesses. One of the main ingredients for this to work is making the website attractive.

So how does a web designer go about doing this? One strategy is to work on the visual style of the page. The imagery used, all of the things that the visitor will see. Things like the typography, the types of images, the colours and icons used. These are all factors which add up into making a good-looking web page.

If one is unsure about what exactly to use then try things. Choose things because you like them initially and work from there. Combine your own ideas with ideas from other popular websites and you will eventually formulate a unique style for your page. A page that is visually informed, design wise.

Can you Trust Web Hosting Review Websites?

Posted on February 11, 2015 at 2:46 pm

Hosting review websites are all over the internet, but you can never be sure of how authentic they are. A lot of the websites where people can freely contribute a review of the service they’ve received from one company or another are used by the companies themselves as a reputation management tool.

More trustworthy websites are generally forums where they have a visible community of contributors. On these websites you can get a general idea of the service you may encounter with certain companies, with the benefits of an engaged community who can fact check thanks to their experience in the industry, and have the expertise to perform a proper judgement of the services should somebody claim they had a poor experience which was entirely the hosting company’s fault.

In review, you should leave websites which provide reviews of hosting companies alone, unless you can be sure that the information you’re getting is from real people.
